| IN MY OPINION THIS MURAL DEPICTS A GATHERING OF GREAT SIGNIFICANCE/IMPORTANCE- ONE OF URGENCY. THE FEMALE FIGURE-WHO I THINK REPRESENTS MOTHER EARTH APPEARS TO BE DEAD---A CALAMITY TO BE SURE. Evidently a major issue needed to be dealt with and thus a collective meeting is being held somewhere and is reported as a current event or its memory was recalled on this Kiva wall-perhaps as a sort of history lesson. My thinking is based upon random interviews over the years with diverse Native American tribal members who tell me that the various figures and head-dresses identify different cultures and individual tribes-for instance the figure at the far left is from Meso-America and the Southwest while most of the head-dresses that appear lined up over-head are from the northern Plains and Great Lakes Region and areas east of the Mississippi River. Some went so far as to indicate tribes as diverse as the Huron and the Seminole, but I've not yet gathered that data systematically. The West Coast/ North West does not seem to be represented. WHATEVER THE CONCERNS, THEY APPEAR TO BE CONFINED TO NORTH AMERICA PRIMARILY, JUDGING FROM THEIR AFFINITIES AS REVEALED. PERHAPS THEY DISCUSSED HOW TO DEAL WITH A SERIES OF NATURAL DISASTERS-ones that would bring about vast changes and create mass population shifts-think the emptying of Chaco, Mesa Verde, Cahokia, Pottery Mound etc etc...note especially that some of the reports by Dennis Gilpin present data of berm surrounded communities (a Mississippi Valley trait) located in north-central Arizona [north of the Holbrook area somewhat parallel to the Rio Puerco of the West drainage]. ...OR- AS MANY ARE WELL ARMED, PERHAPS THE THREATS / NEEDS OF AGGRESSION ARE THE TOPIC... i.e. Discussions by S. LeBlanc or C.Turner etc. SERIOUS MATTERS INDEED !!! POSTED 10/21/06 |
